Chapter 23
I was sitting in my room, looking over the plays I had drawn up earlier, thinking about what had happened at the park with Wino Jack this morning. I wonder if anyone else knew that Wino Jack was secretly the man, with great shooting and coaching skills. I was sure that was impossible for anyone to know; he wasn’t only good, Wino Jack was damn good. He knew how to play the game and how to play from a technical, fundamental standpoint. I couldn’t understand why he wanted to be a wino instead of a basketball player. That still had my head messed up.
I changed clothes because it was getting close to time for me to head to the gym to work out with my new team. I looked at all the money again that was under my bed in my secret box and knew that I was kid rich. I had never seen so much money before in cash, other than on television. I wondered how much money Corn and Califf really had between the both of them.
I stood in front of the mirror as I slipped on my shorts, and when I rose up with no shirt on, the championship ring was hanging from my neck. I touched it and thought about Mr. P. I knew he would have my head if he knew what I was up to. He had been over again and taken my mother out on another date. It seem like they were getting close and I really didn’t mind it. I threw on my shirt and headed to the kitchen to fix a bowl of oatmeal before I left. I loved my oatmeal; it was quick and easy, and I could load it up like my jump shot, with butter.
“Hey, son, I see you’re dressed to hit the park,” my mother said as she walked in the kitchen carrying my sister.
“Yeah; I got out earlier, too. I wanted to work out a little; you know I have to be on point. Next year is high school, and I’m sure Rufus King is going to have some real tough competition out there.” I wasn’t really worried about it; I just needed to say something.
“I’m sure the competition level will be a little greater but, Danny, you might not make it if you keep hanging around the wrong crowd of people.” She paused and looked at me for my reaction. “You know that, right?” she said as she tilted her head to the side.
I knew from her words that Mr. Percy had said something to her about me playing the game with Corn and Califf. I knew she would trip hard if she found out what was next.
“Don’t give me that look, son. I know that you had a run-in with some of the neighborhood thugs on the court, but I don’t want you getting mixed up with the wrong crowd, Danny. Michael says that you have a bright future if you keep your head on straight and your snotty, little nose clean.
